Starting along the coastline from Drljanda Bay, the striking scent of native plant species and medicinal herbs gradually fades as you approach Zaglave, an area of the island known for its bare rock exposed to the strong blows of the bura wind and sea spray. For this reason, vegetation in this area is almost nonexistent, yet it perfectly illustrates why Pag is known as the “Moon Island.”

The most remarkable and iconic feature of this trail is undoubtedly the Svetojanj fortress, a prehistoric fort dating back to the 6th century. During the reign of Emperor Justinian, it served as a lookout and a crucial defensive element in the highly sophisticated system protecting Byzantine maritime interests during the early period of his Adriatic dominance. After a challenging ascent, the viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Velebit Channel and the breathtaking peaks of the Velebit mountains.

The enchanting small, natural, centuries-old pond Svetojašnica is one of the few preserved ponds on the island. It serves as an oasis in the heart of Zaglave and was for years the only source of water for Pag’s sheep. According to local tradition, it has dried up only once in the last 100 years.

Next to the quarry lies the Novalja Field, a green oasis in contrast to the previously barren terrain, rich in drinking water—a true source of life. The ancient Romans recognized this too; in the 1st century, they carved a 1,100-meter-long underground aqueduct through solid rock, connecting the field to the settlement of Novalja. Known locally as Talijanova buža or the Roman aqueduct, it can be viewed at the City Museum, and visitors can walk through part of its interior.

The Church of St. Anthony is perched in a fairytale-like location above the pond, surrounded by tall reeds. On the pond’s edge, in the shade of tall trees, you can refresh yourself at a natural spring, though it tends to dry up during the summer months. The trail culminates in the picturesque coastal village of Stara Novalja, where untouched nature and vibrant Mediterranean landscapes, intertwined with rocky terrain, perfectly symbolize the enchanting beauty of this island.
